Strange Days
Strange Days (1995) Review – Is This Cyberpunk Cult Classic Finally Getting the Recognition It Deserves?
This week we're plugging into Strange Days (1995), the overlooked cyberpunk thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by James Cameron. We'd never seen it before, but after hearing so many people call it a hidden gem, we had to find out whether it deserved its growing cult status.
We dive into Ralph Fiennes' phenomenal performance, Angela Bassett stealing every scene she's in, the film's disturbing SQUID technology, its surprisingly accurate predictions about surveillance, civil unrest and media obsession, and why this 90s sci-fi thriller feels even more relevant today than it did when it first flopped at the box office. We also debate whether the film tries to juggle one genre too many, discuss its unforgettable performances, and explain why, despite its long runtime, we couldn't look away.
Alongside our feature review, we revisit Starfleet Academy Episode 6, discuss the latest Star Trek news, chat about Wednesday, get distracted by Arc Raiders, and somehow end up talking about roast dinners in bathtubs. As always, expect plenty of laughs, questionable opinions, terrible predictions and enough sci-fi rambling to fill a SQUID recording.
