Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Close Encounters of the Third Kind Review: We Revisit Spielberg's UFO Classic and End Up Completely Split
This week on the Untitled Sci-Fi Show, we somehow begin by discussing everything from Cheers and Dirty Dancing to why one of us thinks Patrick Swayze deserves a stern talking to, before diving headfirst into Steven Spielberg's legendary alien classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Before the main review, we tackle another round of Guess the Intro, chat about the latest episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and debate whether the series is finally proving the doubters wrong. Along the way we praise Klingons, question android emotions, and spend far too long fixing Star Trek scripts that nobody asked us to rewrite.
Then it's time for the main event as we revisit Close Encounters of the Third Kind. One of us is captivated by Spielberg's slow-burning mystery, stunning practical effects and unforgettable finale, while the other spends most of the runtime wondering why we're following Roy Neary instead of the scientists doing all the interesting work. We break down the visual effects, the iconic five-note musical conversation, Roy's increasingly questionable life choices, and whether this sci-fi classic deserves its legendary reputation nearly fifty years later.
For once, we don't completely agree—and that makes for one of our most entertaining reviews yet.
