Paprika Review: We Try (and Mostly Fail) to Explain Anime's Weirdest Sci-Fi Dream
This week on the Untitled Sci-Fi Show we throw ourselves headfirst into Paprika (2006), a film that somehow manages to be absolutely brilliant while making us question whether we accidentally fell asleep halfway through. We attempt to untangle one of the most confusing sci-fi anime films ever made, debate whether Christopher Nolan borrowed a few ideas for Inception, and discover that sometimes a giant shadow monster, a parade of haunted kitchen appliances and a bloke reading Hard Boys magazines are apparently perfectly normal.
Before our brains melt completely, we chat about revisiting Half-Life, Kerbal Space Program, Banjo-Kazooie, Crimson Desert, classic PC gaming mods, YouTube rabbit holes, dodgy animated kids' films, Mortal Kombat 2, Send Help, Jack Ryan, and why gardening can be more traumatic than surviving a horror movie.
As always, Sci-Fi Roulette makes the decision for us and lands on one of the greatest action films ever made, and thankfully, it's a film we might actually understand.
So grab a DC Mini, sprinkle on a little paprika, and join us as we attempt to explain the unexplainable... with varying degrees of success.
